Let's Get Started!
Step 2: Create an "About You" Section
Now's the time to showcase your personality. Keep in mind that you should reverse engineer your "about" section to be relevant to the type of employer you hope to attract.
Be sure to include the following:
Name
Power Statement
Story
Unique Value Proposition
The tone should reflect your personal brand
Step 3: Edit
Now that you have your content and bio recorded, go back through and make some edits.
In this edit you are going to want to review the following:
Spelling
Grammar
Overall Readability
Step 4: Select a Platform
Things to consider:
Creating and hosting a website
Pricing
Editing
Prior Experience with web design/editing
Step 5: Create a Portfolio Design
Now comes the fun part! A well-designed website will have a large impact on how employers perceive you. As you're designing consider brand, layout, and content. There's no one "right way" to design your portfolio. Use your intuition and creativity to present your work in a way that stands out.
Incorporate your personal brand - Use the fonts, colors, and images from your personal brand guide for the font and color themes for your site.
Organize your layout - Be creative and intuitive in finding the most efficient way for your employer to find what they're looking for. Consider organizing your work by project, skill set, experiences on your resume, etc.
Show Your Process -Tell a story through your content. Employers want to understand how you think through a problem. Outline the process you used to get to the solution. The final product is important, but showcasing your thinking process is more impressive and impactful to your reader.
Step 6: Add Important Documents and Key Projects
Now it is time to link your important documents such as your resume to your website. You will need to upload a PDF of your resume to the server where you are hosting the site.
Step 7: Complete Final Edit
This is your final edit of the site. However, with an online portfolio, you can continue to update and edit as time goes on. So if something becomes more or less relevant, you can make those changes later. In this edit phase you have two primary objectives: check the formatting and re-read the content.
Step 8: Publish Website
Ready. Set. BLAST OFF! Hit that beautiful "publish button" and admire your finished product. Go get yourself some hard-earned *insert beverage of choice* and then brag about it a little to your roommates or spouse.
Step 9: Link Resume & LinkedIn
Now that your portfolio is live, you will want to link the site to your resume.
Copy and paste the URL and hyperlink to your resume.
Type out the portfolio website (This makes it so someone viewing your resume digitally can click on the link and so someone viewing a hardcopy of your resume can access your portfolio)
You've completed the assignment...
Congratulations!
