Rule #1
You should consider negotiating if there is a MATERIAL DISCONNECT between your offer received vs. your personal goals and expectations.
Rule #2
One thing you can always negotiate...MORE TIME to consider an offer. Cite the BYU Marriott School Policy on offer acceptance timing, and involve Noelani when a company is not abiding by that policy.
Rule #3
Its always good to have choices. Before you turn down any in-hand offer, seek to have a competing offer alternative to consider.
Rule #4
Always negotiate in good faith, demonstrating integrity and humility in the process. A negotiation is not a fight. It requires a polite ask of items that are highly important to you. The principle is WIN-WIN.
Rule #5
You should not feel obligated to negotiate in every case. If an offer seems fair, feels right to you, and is from a company you wish to be a part of...just say YES. When you negotiate, you raise the bar on your performance.
Rule #6
Do your research before negotiating. Some companies simply do not negotiate, their offers are firm; others are more flexible. You can do damage, up to, and including LOSING your offer.
Rule #7
Offer terms that are NOT likely to be negotiated include benefits. These are typically standard across the entire employee base and are already locked in.
Rule #8
Offer terms that can potentially be negotiated include: Salary, bonus, and relocation allowance. Start by asking: Is there flexibility on pay? (Understand your market value before you begin the negotiation.) Negotiate from a position of strength, always best to have a competing offer to benchmark.
Be strategic: Decide what you’re willing to accept and provide 2-3 good reasons why you’re worth it.
Rule #9
Don’t ask for more than three things. Fewer is better, more is an indicator of immaturity and ingratitude.
Rule #10
When the company responds to your requests, be prepared to say YES! When you find a company that is the right culture fit, worry less about the money and more about landing the role.
Golden Rule
Never Revenge an offer
1st Year…once you say YES to an internship, keep networking to build the network for the full-time job.
2nd Years…once you accept a full-time offer – you are DONE recruiting. Do NOT entertain other offers. Keep your word!
